Using a standard autoresponder, you include a special email address in an advertisement or message. If a person sends an email to this address, he will get a return email message (or several over a specified course of time).
These are great for sending more information to people because they allow you to send messages over a long length of time. A good autoresponder system will let you configure how many messages to send, how often and so forth.
So why use an autoresponder service? Well, it usually requires several views of an advertisement for a prospect to "bite" and purchase what you are selling. What you can do with a good autoresponder is get a person to sign up for a series of reports, say on internet marketing, and then automatically deliver those reports over a period of time. Thus, the person who visited your web site once and asked for the series winds up getting half a dozen or more visits from you over a period of time.
If the autoresponder system is good your reader will get as many personalized emails as you want to send him over a variable amount of time. It's usually a good idea to spend as much time on your autoresponder messages as you can, so you are not wasting your energy and annoying your reader.
One of the wonderful things that you can do with an autoresponder is set up a 5 or 10 part free course on the subject of whatever you are attempting to sell. Generally, it is not a good idea just to do a blatant sales letter as it looks too much like spam.
In fact, one of the major keys to success is to make sure your autoresponder messages do not have the appearance of spam. You need to be sure that this is crystal clear in the first sentence or two of your messages. If your readers believe they have received spam all of your work and effort is for naught. They will simply delete your messages.
