Excite was the brainchild of six people: Mark Van Haren, Ryan McIntyre, Ben Lutch, Joe Kraus, Graham Spencer, and Martin Reinfried. They came up with the idea of creating a software tool to manage the vast amount of information on the internet while sitting in a taqueria in Redwood City, CA, on the evening of February 28, 1993. The company they created was originally called Architext.
A few years later, in October 1995, Architext launched Excite.com. The company grew fast, especially after signing exclusive distribution rights with Microsoft Network and Netscape. The name of the company was changed to Excite, Inc, and soon after it went public.
Excite was, from the beginning, one of the largest search engines on the web. If you want to find something, Excite is a great place to start.
Excite has a large index and is very popular. In 1996 it merged with two of it's competitors (Megellan and Webcrawler). These two services continue to run separately.
It is also a great place to list your site. It uses description but not keyword Metatags, and it crawls your entire site every two weeks. This means you only need to submit your home page to the submission service.
